Polish Wedding Traditions VII - Polish Wedding Cake

Since I recently posted amazing wedding cakes by Ana Parzych, I decided that I must follow up with a post on Polish Wedding Cake Traditions. So here it is.

Wedding cake is a symbol of sweetness. Traditionally, the groom is supposed to cut the first piece of cake and share it with his bride. In return, the bride should then cut a piece off and share it with her husband. The rest of the wedding cake should be cut together by the newly married couple, in a symbol of sharing together their life and happiness. Often today, that role is already taken by the kitchen staff of waitresses. (how romantic)

As you probably know, wedding cakes not only come in variety of flavors but also in variety of designs. The trend now is to have few tiers stacked directly on top of each other. In past years, tires were separated by gaps filled with flowers, or even were standing on separate cake stands. I think it can be beautifully done regardless of what the current fashion is.

At the Polish wedding, cake usually is expected to have a topper. I have heard that wedding cake without a topper might bring bad luck. For the past few years, huge trend in Poland is to have at the top of the cake lit sparklers. Decorated in such a way cake, brings attention of guests when during the night it is rolled out of the kitchen. That way your guests won't miss it!
