Yummy Fat Tuesday!

Ok, first of all let me start by saying that Fat Tuesday in Poland is actually on Thursday.
Tłusty Czwartek (tw'oosti(h) chv'art'ek) = Fat Thursday.
I am not really 100% sure why there is this difference. If you are Polish living in American, it actually gives you a reason to eat baked sweet goodies for most of the week before Lent starts.
Pączki (po(n)chk'ee) are the signature pastries for this occasion. As a child I made them few times with my mom, but it requires some talent for them to come out just the right way. It is not that simple. Pączki are similar to doughnuts but taste quite different. They are much heavier and their dough is much chewier. Below is a picture of how they usually look in Poland. You can however, get them with sugar powder or nuts on top instead of glaze.

Here is an idea for your wedding, instead of tower of cupcakes, how about a tower made out of pączki ?
